The parking lot in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, where two small boys died in the back of their parents' car. SANJO, Niigata -- Two young boys were pronounced dead at hospital Sunday after they had been left in a parked car for some seven hours.
According to police, the two boys likely died of heatstroke, and the parents are being questioned under suspicion of negligence as guardians causing death.
The victims are one-year-old Kanade Takatsuki and his 11-month-old brother Hayata, sons of Hitoshi Takatsuki, 33, and his wife, 28. According to police, the family arrived home at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning from a trip to Tokyo, after which the parents left the two sleeping boys in their car seats in the back seat and went into their apartment.
Mrs. Takatsuki realized there was something wrong when she went to check on her sons for the first time around 12:30 p.m. Mr. Takatsuki phoned emergency services, but when they arrived on the scene the boys were apparently not breathing and did not have a pulse.
The Niigata Local Meteorological Observatory has stated that around 8 millimeters of rain fell between 5 to 6 a.m. Sunday, and light rain continued until about 9 a.m. However, the weather then cleared and the temperature rose to 27.8 degrees Celsius by 12:30 in the afternoon and 29.7 degrees at 1:26 p.m. The parking lot where the two boys died does not have a roof and the car was exposed to direct sunlight, causing the interior of the car to reach very high temperatures, police believe.
