Friday 04th April, 05:45 AM JST

TOKYO —
The education ministry unveiled Thursday a trial version of new education textbooks for English classes designated for fifth and sixth graders in public elementary schools in line with the full implementation in fiscal 2011 of new education guidelines. The size-B5, 65-page textbooks called ‘‘English Note’’ include illustrations, photographs, riddles and games, and are also equipped with audio CDs.

An official of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said, ‘‘We want students to be familiar with pronunciation and rhythm of the English language instead of memorizing grammar and words.’’ In the fifth-grade textbook, students will learn how to greet people, count and introduce themselves, as well as culture-related information. In the sixth-grade textbook, students will learn the alphabet, ways to discuss their dreams in life and ways to introduce others to Japanese culture.

The ministry came up the textbooks with the aim of helping students better acquire English-language pronunciation and rhythm by repeatedly listening to and saying about 25 expressions such as ‘‘How are you?’’
